Spring Clean with Me ~ Clear, Tidy, Organize & Harmonize

Writer: Britta Van DunBritta Van Dun

Spring is The Season of renewal — burgeoning buds appear on the tips of tree branches and stalks of flower bulbs rise up from the still cold earth, suddenly bursting into bloom. If you live in warmer climes, you can already feel the thrilling of this new, bright season. Ever aligned with the cosmos, we naturally move with the upward energies of spring. There's the instinctual impulse to release the old and invite in new, refresh our lives and all that is in it.

Spring cleaning isn’t just about clearing cobwebs, tossing out that junky ol thang or organizing that one closet — it’s also an opportunity to release what no longer serves and to invite in new beginnings. By decluttering with intention, we clear stagnant energy and set up our spaces to create harmony and flow. Aligning home with Life, fresh energies and possibilities, well, blossom.

So. Set aside time, throw on some tunes, and let’s spring clean together! For help with motivation below you'll find a streamlined method to physically declutter, sacred smudging rituals to energetically cleanse, and basic Feng Shui principles to create harmony and balance in your home - and life.

1. Declutter & Organize

Marie Kondo’s KonMari method got super popular a few years ago. Mostly because she asked the very potent question: “Does this spark joy?” and she ritualized the act of thanking every object and article of clothing that is no longer needed, but once was. Beyond Kondo's, there are a bunch of methods for clearing and organizing. Here's one that I hope helps you declutter efficiently while creating an intentional connection to the items you choose to keep.

1: Start with Categories, Not Rooms

Instead of cleaning room by room, organize by category: Clothes; Books; Papers; Miscellaneous items; and Sentimental items

2: Create A Designated Sorting Spot

You'll start creating piles: Keep, Donate, Recycle and Bin. Large garbage bags and storage boxes can be helpful here, especially for the items you will donate, recycle and trash. Sorting can take time, so be sure that the designated sorting spot isn't in a common walkway or area that could become bothersome.

3: Hold Each Item and Ask: “Have I used you in the last year . . . Would I pick you out today?" You could Also ask, "Do you spark joy?"

  • If yes → Keep and find a dedicated place for it.

  • If no → Thank it for its service and let it go. Donate, recycle, or discard with good intention.

  • If you're on the fence about an item, ask "Could you make someone else happy?" This process can take days, so give yourself time and sprinkle with breaks and snacks.

4: Organize and Store with Care

  • Store items vertically, such as clothing in a drawer, so you can see everything at a glance.

  • Group similar items together to avoid the creeping in of clutter.

  • Leave extra "empty" space in drawers and shelves to give your items breathing room to appreciate and to make selection easier.

By clearing away the objects that no longer serve, you create more space for the belongings that truly align with your current desires and wishes.

Smudge: Energetically Clear Your Space

Once you’ve physically decluttered, it’s time to clear the energetic residue left behind. Smudging is an ancient practice found across many Indigenous and spiritual traditions. The smoke from burning sacred herbs can purify your home and mind, creating a peaceful, clear atmosphere.

  1. Gather your tools: Use herbs such as juniper, rosemary, pine, lavender, or mugwort. Please consider only purchasing sustainably harvested white sage, sweetgrass, and palo santo as these species are often over-harvested.

  2. Set your intention: Are you releasing the doldrums of winter? Clearing a past relationship or relationship pattern? Releasing stress? Creating a fresh start? Maybe take a few moments to jot down what isn't working and what would.

  3. Start at the front door: Light your herb bundle or incense over a catch bowl and let the smoke gently fill the space.

  4. Move clockwise through the house: Wave the smoke into corners, closets, and any hidden spaces where energy tends to stagnate.

  5. Close the ritual: When finished, smudge yourself at the front door and extinguish the bundle safely. Thank the herbs, your home, and any guides or energies that supported you.

✨ Not a fan of smoke? You can also cleanse energetically by turning on a salt lamp, using sound (like a bell or chime), or visualizing light filling every room.

3. Feng Shui: Harmony & Flow

Feng Shui is the ancient Chinese art of arranging spaces to promote harmony and balance. Once your home is physically and energetically clear, you can use these simple Feng Shui principles to arrange furniture and belongings to enhance flow and attract high vibes:

Entryway

  • Keep the front door clean and clutter-free to invite new opportunities.

  • Place a plant and/or crystal near the entrance to anchor positive energy.

Balance the Five Elements

  • Depending upon the intention for each room, incorporate symbols of the five elements to enhance certain qualities and create overall balance:

Wood – Plants, green tones symbolize growth and vitality & purify the air

Fire – Candles and red hues represent passion and fecundity

Water – Mirrors, blues, and water features are linked with flow and intuition

Earth – Ceramic, stone, and neutral tones symbolize grounding and stability

Metal – White, gray, and metallic objects represent clarity and precision

Clear Pathways

  • Ensure that doors and hallways are clear and easy to navigate — this encourages a smooth flow of energy throughout the home.

Utilize the "Command" Position

In key rooms (especially the bedroom and office), place furniture so that you have a clear view of the door without being directly in line with it. This creates a sense of safety and stability.

Be Mindful of Mirrors

  • Mirrors reflect light and energies — use them to expand and brighten spaces. Avoid placing them directly opposite the bed or front door (as this can reflect energy away).

Be sure to divide and conquer specific categories and particular cabinets, cupboards or closets . . . If it starts to feel overwhelming, take a break. This is really meant to be an enjoyable practice to set you up for a balanced and spacious season ahead.
